Saving by Spending

I have to note that as I’m writing this post, I’m trying to resist the urge to turn the heat back on. It’s currently 43 degrees in my neck of the woods with an expected high of 47. It’s almost the middle of May! I refuse to turn my heat back on. I may have to drag out the space heater again.

But I digress.

In a recent post, I mentioned that we recently purchased a back pack leaf blower. This was a tough purchase for me to make. When we first moved into the house, we purchased one of those hand held, plug-in models. It was inexpensive, but it didn’t do the job. We’ve got a lot of trees on our acre plus lot. One year we paid someone to do the clean up for us since it always takes us forever. The cost: over $500. Yikes! It was worth it though to get everything cleaned up, but I vowed I’d never do that again.

Last year, we didn’t do a very good job cleaning up the yard because of my husband’s work related allergies. He’s since been moved to another building and this spring, we were ready to get the job done. I spoke to a friend of mine, who is very knowledgeable about such things. He recommended a brand of leaf blower to us. I watched the sales at Home Depot and used our Veteran’s discount. The final cost of the blower: $269. Much less expensive than having someone come in to do the cleanup.

I have to say, after using the thing, that this might just be the best purchase we’ve made for the house. It’s so powerful that it can blow a pile of leaves all the way into the woods in the back of the house. We made fairly quick work of all the leaves. Now the yard is cleaned up and we didn’t have to pay someone else to do it. Plus, we’ve got the blower to do other jobs, like cleaning around the bushes and blowing out those stupid spinner things that fall from the trees each spring. You should have seen that pile! Sheesh.

As far as I’m concerned, having the right tools for the job is like having good food in the fridge. If you’ve got the right tools, you are far less likely to go out and have someone else do it for you. Now that the yard is all cleaned up, we’ve got to start weeding the beds. I want to grow some tomato plants this year and maybe a few herbs. I’ve got the perfect spot picked out.

Now if I can just get things to warm up a bit and get the rain to stop.
