This is not my idea. I really wish I would have thought of this. I actually got it from Real Simple Magazine. Have a stuff swap with your friends. We all have stuff we want to get rid of, right? Here’s what you do:
Make a guest list of friends and family who you would like to invite to this event. Try to invite people who might have the kind of stuff you might need. For example, if you have kids, invite other friends who have kids. If your friends are geeks and so are you (no offense here as I am a geek now as well), you probably all have stuff you want to get rid of that your other friends might like.
Ask each person to bring a certain number of items they want to get rid of. You can have a theme, like books, cd’s and dvd’s; household items; clothing (just make sure everyone is around the same size or that you have a lot of people there so everyone gets to swap around) or you can just have people bring 10-15 random items. Make sure you specify that all items should be in good or working condition.
Get some munchies, have everyone over and swap away. The article recommends having a system. For example, you can give everyone 1 token for each item they bring and when they spend all their tokens they are done.
All the remaining items get donated to charity.
I love, love, love this idea. What a great way to get your friends together and get rid of stuff you don’t want anymore. I’m going to feel out my friends to see if they would be interested in something like this. You should, too. Is this something you’d be interested in doing? Do you see any problems with having a party like this? I’d love to see your opinion.
